Embrace of the Deep by John Gerstner

“Embrace of the Deep” is a farcical scene about humanity’s uncertain connectedness to earthly creatures. The star of the painting is a woman, bravely sharing the stage with a multitude of fish creatures of all sizes, shapes and colors. Clearly at peace, she grasps a fish in each of her outstretched hands, one symbolically facing up, the other down. The serene expression on her face and the sense of unity with the underwater environment evoke a feeling of peace and oneness with nature, as if she has become a part of the ocean’s rhythm. The outlines of buildings on the horizon suggest a hopeful future harmony between human beings and the natural world.
